They had restricted themselves to dabbling in organised crime, running casinos, and financial banking.
Throughout the end of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first, their numbers dwindled, as covens were discovered and destroyed. Entire bloodlines were extirpated, and only in Europe did any Covens survive.
The species itself had hovered on the brink of extinction; a few more decades and they would have all either been put to the sword – or the bullet – or a tailored virus would finally have been engineered which would have rid the world of any carriers of the strain.
But then came
the Upheaval.
The economic collapse caused by the United States Of America defaulting on its national debt led to wars ravaging every continent on Earth.
Somehow, miraculously, nuclear weapons were not used; nonetheless, the fabric of life as it had been known was completely torn. The fires raged for years, and the world population plummeted, devastated by war and disease and famine.
When it seemed the world itself had caught fire and burned, the clans rose once more to take their chunks of flesh.
